10 reviews for Nordic Ware 4-Capacity Microwave Egg Boiler – White

  1. 5 out of 5

I received this product yesterday and tried it out with four eggs this morning. My microwave is 1200 watts, while the instructions only cover 600, 800, and 1000 watts. On my first attempt, I cooked them for 8 minutes (as per the 1000-watt instructions for hard-boiled eggs), and that wasn’t enough for fully hard-boiled eggs but was too long for soft. The yolks weren’t completely hard but were also not runny. Some parts of the yolk were sticky and bright yellow, while others were denser. I had read that it might take a few tries to get it right, but the first batch was still edible. The egg whites cooked perfectly, and the shells peeled off effortlessly.

For my second attempt, I again used four eggs but increased the time to 10 minutes, and it turned out perfectly hard-boiled and easy to shell. I couldn’t believe how great it was—where has this been all my life?

After these initial successes, I loved it so much that I ordered a second one. I need to cook 7 or more eggs at a time, so now that I know it works well, I’m going to experiment with using both units in the microwave simultaneously and figure out the timing.

Just a heads up: the unit does get HOT. Occasionally, boiling water splashes out of the top vent hole. My lid doesn’t snap on as the instructions suggest; it just sits there but stays in place. If yours is similar, be careful when removing it from the microwave, as the lid can tip, and boiling water may splash down your fingers. I stopped using potholders to take it out; instead, I now use two larger silicone grips that help open tough jar lids. They’re perfect for protecting my hands from the heat, steadying the unit, and ensuring a good grip even if they’re wet. They also make it easy to remove the lid for rinsing the eggs under cold water.

Cleanup is a breeze! Even with one egg cracking during cooking, there was no mess. I’m actually considering getting some of these as holiday gifts for my laid-back brothers!

Edit: Aug 13, 2009. OOPS! I tried using two units in the microwave at the same time to figure out how long it would take to hard-boil 8 eggs. I set the microwave for 20 minutes, but after 4 minutes, it stopped completely—not an explosion, but it just shut down. When I tried to reset it, there was no power. I unplugged it to check the connection, and the cord was HOT, as were the metal prongs; I burned my fingers when I touched them. I’ve never experienced anything like this with a microwave before. I think I’ll stick to using one egg cooker at a time and just rotate them. I’ve never liked putting metal in the microwave, so maybe it just got too hot.

I replaced the ones I bought over 25 years ago that finally started to wear out. Poaching, scrambling, and hard-boiling eggs in the microwave takes just a minute or less, and cleanup is super easy!

This set is fantastic for quickly making breakfast sandwiches and effortlessly whipping up Eggs Benedict. Cleanup is a breeze! Once you figure out the ideal cooking time for your eggs (around 50 seconds), you’re all set! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

This product requires a microwave to boil eggs and is essentially just a microwave-safe device. I didn’t realize this when I purchased it, as it has no electrical connections. Unless you have a microwave that can accommodate the boiler and believe that eggs boiled in the microwave are healthier, I recommend opting for an electric egg boiler instead.

I almost gave this product 5 stars because it cooks eggs beautifully. However, due to some design flaws that could pose a danger, I had to deduct 1 star. I really hope they address these issues because it has the potential to earn 6 stars.

Now for the positives: it works remarkably well. I had a terrible experience cooking eggs in the microwave years ago—they turned out rubbery and dry, so I was initially skeptical. But these eggs come out perfect! The key, as others have noted, is the aluminum hood inside the plastic lid, which protects the eggs from direct microwave exposure. The microwaves boil the water, and the steam does the cooking. It’s a clever design.

It may take some experimentation to adjust it for different microwaves, but once you get the hang of it, it’s almost foolproof. (Though based on some 1-star reviews, I realize it’s not completely foolproof; some people can be quite clever. 😊) The eggs are on par with boiled eggs—no discernible difference at all. And the peeling is incredibly easy. After rinsing in cold water, just crack all around and peel under a gentle stream of water. Perfect every time! Someone mentioned this is typical of steamed eggs, which is exactly what these are.

I’ve discovered a couple of cooking methods that would have been helpful if included in the minimalist instructions. The standard method suggests cooking for 6-9 minutes and letting it stand for 2 minutes, which I’ll call the “fast” method. This works well for firmer whites and softer yolks. In my 1300-watt microwave, the sweet spot for jumbo eggs straight from the fridge is 6+2, yielding firm whites and mostly runny yolks. For more set yolks, try 6+3 or 6+4. The downside is you need to be present to stop the cooking, and it can get very hot.

Alternatively, there’s the “slow” method, where you reduce the cooking time and increase the standing time. For my microwave, 4+15 minutes with cold jumbo eggs results in a softer white and a just-set yolk. If I cut the cooking time to 3:30, I can extend the standing time to 20-30 minutes. The advantages are that I don’t need to be there, and it’s much cooler, but the whites may not be as cooked, and the yolks tend to be more set.

    Now, onto the issues.

    1. It looks cute—like a giant egg—but that makes it hard to grab since there are no handles. After cooking, it’s boiling hot and filled with steam, making it slippery. The instructions suggest letting it cool for 2 minutes and then removing the cover while running cold water over the eggs. This is dangerous! After 2 minutes, it’s still very hot, and lifting the lid puts your hand right over the steam vent. Instead, I recommend carefully removing the cooker using oven mitts or a thick towel, placing it in the sink, and running cold water over it for 20-30 seconds before removing the lid. Just be cautious; the aluminum tray and the water in the base remain very hot.

    2. The lid doesn’t fit tightly onto the base—no threads or ridges, just a flat surface which isn’t very wide. When I took it out of the microwave, steam escaped from the seal, and I could feel the heat through two layers of towel. A threaded design would be much better. One reviewer mentioned losing a rubber seal, but that doesn’t resolve the issue of the lid sealing tightly to the base.

    3. Steam escaping from the side seam is an issue. I haven’t been burned, but I’ve felt steam through several layers of towel.

    4. Water collects in the gap between the aluminum hood and the plastic lid, which doesn’t drain easily. I’m concerned about moisture buildup leading to mold over time. It would be nice if it could be taken apart for cleaning.

    5. Cleaning the aluminum tray can be a hassle if an egg leaks, which happens occasionally. It would be better if the tray were made of plastic or had a non-stick coating, as cooked-on egg is notoriously hard to clean. The design with holes and depressions makes it tricky to get in there with a cleaning cloth.

    6. Once, with three eggs, one burst, one was very soft-boiled, and one was hard-boiled. This was a rare occurrence, but it meant a messy cleanup. I’ve noticed that the eggs don’t always cook to the same doneness. I used to place it in the center of the microwave turntable, thinking rotation didn’t matter since only the water was heated. However, I’ve found that placing it on the edge helps achieve more even cooking.

    7. The depressions in the aluminum tray are too shallow, causing the eggs to tip over, though this hasn’t affected cooking.

    8. The water fill line is nearly invisible—a raised line on a completely white interior. It’s not a huge issue since you’ll learn the water amount after a couple of uses, but it could be improved.

Overall, this is a fantastic unit, and I’m definitely keeping mine. However, I would appreciate better safety and usability features.

09/05/10 Update: The aluminum tray is now sticking to the lid and the base almost every time. Sometimes I need to shake it vigorously to free it, which is a bit dangerous, as I can’t just pull them apart with my hands due to the boiling hot eggs and water. I suspect this is due to the different expansion rates of the plastic lid and aluminum lining. All these issues could be easily resolved with a better lid-to-base fit (threaded) and a slightly recessed tray. Mediocre design. I’m disappointed in Nordic Ware. Many users have reported these design flaws over the years, but no changes have been made.

Despite these annoyances, I still like the unit and rate it 4 stars because it’s better than anything else I’ve tried. However, these minor design flaws are definitely avoidable. Come on, Nordic Ware, consider a redesign!

This gadget is the quickest and simplest way to poach an egg. No more waiting for water to boil and anxiously dropping the egg in, hoping it won’t turn into a messy disaster! With this tool, you can perfectly poach two eggs in just about 40 seconds. I adore poached eggs but rarely made them the old-fashioned way because it took too long and the results were hit or miss. Now, thanks to this egg poacher, I enjoy perfectly poached eggs whenever I want. If you decide to get one, I doubt you’ll regret it!
