I needed an egg cooker because I can’t have egg yolks for medical reasons, and cleaning a pot every time I hard-boil an egg seemed like too much hassle. After trying two cheaper models ($6 and $8 back then, but still not cheap due to inflation), both broke within a few months and often caused eggs to explode while cooking. I decided to invest in a better option based on positive reviews, and I chose this one.
So far, I’m quite satisfied, even though it’s not perfect. It has an automatic cooking setting that lets you choose how hard-boiled you want your eggs. If I could eat soft-boiled eggs, I’d love that feature! The recommended setting for hard-boiled eggs works fine for me; the yolks aren’t completely hard but are solid enough to separate from the whites. If that matters to you, I recommend adding about an inch more water, as the amount of water affects cooking time, which the manual explains well.
Additionally, it has surfaces for steamed omelets and poached eggs, but I won’t be using those due to my dietary restrictions. For those who need an egg separator, I’ve found that the Chef’n Yolkster Egg Separator works well, with about an 85% success rate.
Back to the Elite: it does its job well, and although it’s not “dishwasher safe,” cleaning by hand is fairly simple as long as no eggs explode. The owner’s manual notes that using tap water will stain the metal plate, but I choose to use tap water anyway; a few stains don’t bother me on a device like this.
This is just my opinion, but I don’t see why the plastic parts couldn’t go in the dishwasher, which would be handy for the omelet feature! The base with the metal tray definitely shouldn’t go in.
Assuming this unit outlasts my previous microwave boilers, I would highly recommend it (though I wish I could eat whole eggs!). Ironically, I was allergic to whites as a child but could eat yolks; now it’s the opposite, though it’s not an allergy issue. Overall, it seems worth the extra investment, and for anyone who can enjoy more of the features than I can, I’d say it’s a great value.
